Herb Mix – Growing instructions

Basically, every planter should be as coverable as possible, either a small greenhouse for the windowsill or a glass, which can be covered with transparent film or/and a small lid. This type of heat storage or having a consistent temperature are important factor during the germination phase and for young plants. We have had good experiences with „plant mats“ as underlay.

Before you start, we would like to answer a few questions that our customers keep asking us.

    • Why are the seeds in a plastic bag and not in a paper bag?
Since most gardeners do not sow all seeds at once and save them for the next year or a later sowing period, the seeds are better protected from moisture in an environmental ly friendly plastic bag than in a paper bag.
Dark storage with constant temperatures of around 10-16 degrees is important.
    • Why aren’t the mint seeds also loose in the bags?
Mint seeds are extremely small and light. It is therefore very difficult to sow them specifically. We have hired a company to process our natural seeds in an environmentally friendly and food safe fleece. This makes it much easier for you to plant our wonderful mint. You can also cut through the fleece and sow it at a later time. The fleece decomposes completely and leaves no residue.
  • Can I sow your herb seeds all year round?
Yes you can. Please make sure that you get enough light (a plant lamp in the winter) and constant heat (20-26 degrees).
  • Do the herbs grow again and again?
Yes, never cut the herbs at their roots. That way you can enjoy our herbs for a longer period of time.

Basil /  Cumin / Dill  / Thyme / Coriander / Oregano / Marjoram / Savory

Cultivation

All of these seeds are light-dependent and must not, therefore, be covered with soil. Moisten the soil a little and press the seeds very lighly onto the soil. For the next few days, please on keep the soil moist with a spray bottle so that the seeds are not „washed away“. Cultivation in in a pot/bucket or a balcony box are possible. It is only important that the plants are not too dense. Temperatures above 20°C are favourable.

Location:

The seeds need sun and warmth to thrive. It loves loose, humid and water-permeable soils in sunny and protected locations. .

Piquing:

From a growth height of 4-5 centimetres it becomes too tight for basil to grow as it needs space. First plant the seeds in small pots and transplant to the garden at the earliest in mid-May.

Care:

Basil needs water regularly. The soil should not dry out completely, but should not be too wet. When watering, take caution not to wet the leaves. It is best to water the soil directly at the bottom as basil does not like when the leaves are moistened during watering. Basil likes to be watered from below and doesn’t like permanent wetness.

Rosemary

Cultivation

Rosemary loves loose soil, if necessary even a short sieving. Moisten the soil and spread the seeds on it. Important! Lightly press the seeds on. Rosemary is a light bucket, therefore (if at all) only cover it lightly with soil! Temperatures between 18-22° are favourable. The germination time here is somewhat longer than with thyme or basil (often -5 weeks).

Location:

Just during germination phase it should be in a sunny and warm place. Afterwards, it could be kept half-shade but it also likes direct sun.

Piquing:

If you grow rosemary from seeds, you sometimes need a little patience, because it germinates very irregularly. If the second pair of leaves can be seen, they can be isolated. However, they should not be planted in the garden until the following year at the earliest, as the young plants are still very sensitive in the first 12-15 months.

Care:

Young plants should be kept moist, but not wet, and waterlogging should also be avoided. Fertilizing is not necessary.

Sage

Cultivation

In a small pot with peat or growing soil, press 1-2 seeds approx. 1 centimetre deep into the soil and cover. Moisten with a spray bottle and lukewarm water.  Gladly cover the plant pot or use a small greenhouse for it.

Location:

At a half-shady and warm window place the germs should break out within 10-20 days.

Piquing:

After the second pair of leaves, plant in the frost-free loose soil, keeping a distance of 35-40 centimetres, otherwise water regularly without fertilizing.

Parsley / Chives / Lovage

Cultivation

Unlike many other herbs, this seeds are not light dependent for what it is better to use loose growing soil and 8-10 seeds per pot. Cover them lightly with soil and moisten them.

If you would like, you can also soak the seeds in warm water for 6-8 hours before planting them to be on the safe side. Keep the seeds at a temperature of around 20-24 degrees and translucently cover the vessel so that the seeds have constant head during germinating. They don’t like temperature fluctuations.

Location:

The seeds like to be warm and and enjoy sun light during the germination phase.

Piquing:

As soon as the second pair of leaves are visible, the young plants can be separated into slightly larger pots. From a size of 5-7 centimetres they can easily be planted in the frost-free outdoor soil.

Care:

These seeds likes moist soil, but no waterlogging. Please water from below.

Mint

Cultivation

Moisten some soil and press the planting disc into the soil lightly. Then moisten again with a spray bottle. Mint needs light to germinate, so it should (if at all) be covered with very little soil. Mint loves constant moisture during the germination phase.

Location:

At the semi-shady window seat, germination starts within 14 days at a constant 20 degrees celsius. During this time, the seed soil must not dry out. Daily airing of the cover or the mini greenhouse prevents the formation of mould.

Piquing:

After germination, the mint grows quite quickly so that the cover can be removed. From 5 centimetres it should be pricked and planted individually.

Care:

Water regularly without waterlogging.

Fennel

Cultivation

Fennel seeds should be sown on a loose and humid soil substrate. The seeds should be thinly covered with soil and the soil should be kept evenly moist to ensure optimum germination. During the germination phase, make sure that the temperature is as constant as possible (20-22°). Seeds and young plants do not like temperature drops/changes.

Location:

Semi-shade to sunny.

Piquing:

From a height of 5-8 centimetres the young plants can be pricked and planted in the frost-free open ground.

Care:

If the herb of the faded fennel is cut off and dreied in bouquets, fennel seeds can easily be harvested and stored for the following year.

Garden Cress

Cultivation

Hardly any herb can be sown and pulled as easily as the cress. Even children can learn how to sow and grow plants by cultivating cress. It doesn’t matter where you sow the cress, this herb grows almost everywhere. Cress makes no special demands on the floor. It can also thrive on poor and drained soils. You just have to make sure that the seeds do not dry out and that the plants remain moist afterwards.

Location:

After sowing, cress should not covered with soil. It belongs to the germs of light and needs direct light. Sow in the cress bed on the windowsill. Sowing is possible all year round. Sow on soil, cotton wool or kitchen paper. Keep it moist. Avoid waterlogging.

Care:

If you don’t have a garden, this is no problem for planting cress. The undemanding herb also thrives on the windowsill. As planting bowls, you can use anything a household has to offer, from bowls to cups to a simple egg carton. The cress also does very well in clay pots. Cress can be sown on almost any substrate. It germinates in normal garden soil just as well as on a folded piece of kitchen paper, a cotton ball or a handkerchief.
