Salad Mix – Growing instructions
Growing lettuce also known as, garden salad is very easy and theoretically can be done all year round. Especially, since lettuce can also be grown in the balcony box. You can sow the salad in January, in a greenhouse or on the windowsill in small growing trays.
Temperatures:
Salad seeds, unlike tomatoes or chilies, don´t like warm temperatures. Therefore, during the germination phase 10 to 15 degrees is ideal. Later, when they become young plants the temperatures should not be warmer than 20 degrees.
If you´d like to plant directly in an outdoor garden, the soil should be frost-free and no cooler than 5 degrees. (especially during the night) The soil should be rich in minerals, we suggest cultivated soil or soils rich in humidity, as salads like bright and flooded with light.
Important: The location should not be too hot, otherwise lettuce tends to “produce” thinly. Attention: Salads are light germs therefore; they should not be covered at all or only with very little soil.
Sowing:
Windowsill: When using this method, it is easier to transplant later.
Press the seeds in small plant pots with growing soil onto the slightly damp soil, cover with very little soil and ideally damp with a spray bottle for the first time. Do not wet, to make sure the seeds do not “float away”.
Directly in the garden: Lightly press 2 to 4 seeds in small pots at a distance of 10 to 15 cm and cover with very little soil. Water gently. (Tip: use small sticks in the earth to see where you planted.)
Transplanting:
Salads don’t like being too close otherwise, they grow too irregularly. Therefore, at the latest when the second pair of leaves can be seen, carefully separate the small plants with a minimum distance of 15 cm. Important: In contrast to tomatoes and chili, the lettuce does not like to be planted too deeply, so the leaf roots should always be above the ground.
To water:
Since lettuce largely consists of water, it should be watered regularly and adequately. Otherwise it will taste bitter quickly and forms unloved fibers.
Tips:
- If you plant new seeds every 14 days, you will have fresh lettuce all year round.
- If you sow or plant the lettuce outdoors before April, please protect it with foil covers or frost protected planters.
- Do not cut baby leaf lettuces at the root. This will allow them to reproduce and grow back with time.
- Provide adequate snail protection. It can be done with snail traps and/or with boundaries.
